AS Monaco’s general manager, Oleksiy Yefimov, detailed the reasons behind the dismissal of head coach Sasa Obradovic and shared insights into the club’s vision for a successor. The decision marked Obradovic as the first EuroLeague coach to lose his job this season.
Inconsistency and the Need for Change
Yefimov explained that despite a positive win record in the EuroLeague (6-4), Monaco struggled with consistent high-quality performances. The team’s inability to establish itself as a strong title contender prompted management to make a change. Obradovic’s departure followed a loss to Le Mans, which left Monaco with a 5-3 record in the French League.
“Our team’s rhythm and habits were not reflective of a true title contender,” Yefimov said. “A coaching change was necessary to refocus and rebuild.”
Obradovic’s Legacy
During his tenure, Obradovic led Monaco to notable successes, including back-to-back French championships and a historic EuroLeague Final Four appearance in 2023. Yefimov expressed gratitude for the Serbian coach’s contributions, emphasizing his role in establishing Monaco as a EuroLeague powerhouse.
“Sasa has been a guiding force behind some of our most memorable victories,” Yefimov added. “He will always be part of our history.”
Interim Coach and Future Plans
Assistant coach Manu Markoishvili has stepped in as interim head coach. Monaco is actively searching for a permanent replacement who can bring strategic leadership and a championship mindset. Yefimov noted that the process is still in its early stages, with discussions ongoing.
High Expectations Remain
Despite the challenges, Monaco’s goals for the season remain unchanged. The club aims to dominate domestically while maintaining consistency as a Final Four contender in the EuroLeague. Yefimov called on players to demonstrate greater determination, teamwork, and fighting spirit.
“Success requires sacrifice, better body language, and unwavering commitment from everyone,” Yefimov stated.
Looking Ahead
Monaco’s immediate focus is regaining momentum under interim leadership. With ambitious goals and a search for a visionary head coach, the club remains committed to achieving excellence both in France and Europe.
