PORTLAND – The Los Angeles Lakers faced a challenging second night of a back-to-back, arriving in Portland in the early hours following a game against the Charlotte Hornets. With Luka Doncic sidelined and LeBron James uncertain due to injuries to his left foot and ankle, it seemed like a daunting task. Yet, LeBron James delivered another stunning performance, scoring 40 points to lead the Lakers to a 110-102 victory.
LeBron’s Remarkable Performance
Lakers coach JJ Redick was impressed, noting that James, at 40 years old, continues to defy expectations. Redick said, “He really just defies anything that’s normal… It’s the mentality… He sets the standard for how you’re supposed to approach this craft.”
James, who is playing in his 22nd season, has managed to maintain elite performance despite his age and the physical toll of the NBA. His 40-point game was the second time he reached that mark since his 40th birthday in December, making him the only player in NBA history with multiple 40-point games at age 40 or older.
LeBron’s Motivation
When asked about his motivation to continue playing at such a high level, James pointed to his son, Lakers rookie Bronny James, as a driving force. “I still love the game… I have an opportunity now to show my son the ranks of how to be a professional in this league,” James explained.
He also surpassed Vince Carter to become the No. 3 player on the all-time list for regular-season games played with 1,542 games under his belt.
Lakers Overcome Struggles
Despite a tough shooting night (9-for-32 from 3-point range), a high number of turnovers (24), and the absence of Doncic, the Lakers managed to get the win thanks to their effort and teamwork. Redick emphasized, “There’s actually only one cheat code in the NBA, and that’s playing hard.” James echoed the sentiment, explaining that playing hard can help cover up mistakes, especially when mistakes like turnovers are made.
Lakers guard Austin Reaves, who had 32 points and seven assists, also praised James’ presence, calling it a huge confidence boost for the team. “He really doesn’t have anything else to prove,” Reaves said. “And if people say he does, then they’re [Michael] Jordan fans.”
