Hornets Hold Off Kings to Win First NBA Summer League Championship

LAS VEGAS – The Charlotte Hornets triumphed over the Sacramento Kings 83-78 on Sunday to secure their first NBA Summer League title, finishing with a perfect 6-0 record.

Knueppel Shines as MVP in Championship Game

Kon Knueppel, the fourth pick in this year’s NBA Draft, led the charge for Charlotte, scoring 21 points and being named the MVP of the championship game. His key three-pointer with 31.1 seconds remaining provided the Hornets with a crucial four-point lead, sealing the win. Knueppel’s exceptional performance continued throughout the summer league, averaging 18.3 points over his final four games after scoring only five in his debut.

Team Contributions Lift Hornets to Victory

In addition to Knueppel’s heroics, Ryan Kalkbrenner added 15 points, while three other players contributed 11 points apiece, playing a significant role in securing the win for Charlotte.

Kings’ Late Rally Falls Short

Despite a strong showing from the Kings, who were led by Isaac Jones with 24 points and 11 rebounds, and Devin Carter who chipped in with 13 points, Sacramento fell short in their bid for a third Summer League title. Nique Clifford, the 24th overall pick, also contributed 10 points and 8 rebounds.

Early Dominance and Free Throws Seal the Win

Charlotte took control early in the game, building a commanding 36-18 lead in the second quarter. The Kings fought back, with Jones narrowing the deficit twice in the final moments, first with a follow-up basket at 1:17 left and then with a three-pointer at 20.3 seconds. But the Hornets closed out the game from the free-throw line, with three players combining to make 5 of 6 foul shots in the final stretch.

Adversity and Perseverance: Coach Jent’s Key Message

Charlotte’s summer league coach Chris Jent highlighted the importance of playing through challenges to win the championship: “In order to win a championship, you’ve got to play through adversity.”

Ejection of James Banks III and Final Moments

In a dramatic turn, James Banks III of the Hornets was ejected in the third quarter after committing a flagrant foul 2 for elbowing Sacramento’s Dylan Cardwell in the face. Cardwell remained on the floor for an extended period during the video review.

Hornets Celebrate Historic Win

With this victory, the Hornets claimed their first-ever NBA Summer League championship, capping off a perfect tournament run and proving their dominance in the competition.
