The De’Aaron Fox era in Sacramento has officially come to an end as the Kings trade their star guard to the San Antonio Spurs in a three-team deal. In return, Sacramento will acquire Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine, according to multiple reports. ESPN broke the news on Sunday.
A Major Trade for the Kings
As part of this trade, Sacramento also receives three first-round picks from the Spurs: the Hornets’ 2025 first-round pick (top 14 protected), the Spurs’ 2027 first-round pick, and the Timberwolves’ 2031 first-round pick. In addition to these, the Kings will also get three second-round picks (Bulls’ 2025 second-round pick, Nuggets’ 2028 second-round pick, and their own 2028 second-round pick) as well as Spurs wing Sidy Cissoko.
The Bulls’ Role in the Trade
In return, the Bulls will acquire forward Zach Collins, guard Tre Jones, and the full rights to their 2025 first-round pick from the Spurs, as well as guard Kevin Huerter from the Kings. The Spurs also secure guard Jordan McLaughlin from Sacramento in the deal.
Fox’s Departure and His New Chapter with the Spurs
Fox, 27, had been with Sacramento since the Kings selected him as the No. 5 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. After signing a five-year, $163 million contract extension with the Kings in 2021, he still had one year remaining on his deal. However, Sacramento decided to part ways with Fox after it became clear he wouldn’t be re-signing for another contract extension.
The trade sends Fox to a Spurs team led by the first-time All-Star and Defensive Player of the Year favorite, Victor Wembanyama. While the Spurs currently sit in 12th place in the Western Conference standings with a 21-25 record, Fox’s arrival could spark a playoff push. As of Sunday evening, the Spurs are just two games behind the final play-in spot.
LaVine to the Kings: A Resurgent Star
In exchange for Fox, the Kings acquire Zach LaVine, who has been having a resurgent season with the Bulls. LaVine is averaging 24 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game. His scoring ability and all-around play will help offset the loss of Fox and strengthen Sacramento’s lineup as they look to build on their promising 2023-24 season.
This trade marks a significant shift in the NBA landscape ahead of the February 6 trade deadline and could have lasting implications for both teams involved.
